Between Lagos, London, and New Orleans: The Art of REWA

The Shop at the CAC is proud to showcase the vibrant and deeply personal work of our current featured artist, REWA, on our rotating art wall.

Born and raised between Nigeria and England, REWA’s life has been shaped by both global perspective and rich cultural heritage. Her background is as fascinating as her art — with a BSc in Physiology and Pharmacology from University College London and a high-profile corporate career in Johannesburg, Lagos, and London — yet she has always carried the soul of an artist. Entirely self-taught, REWA’s early creative passion was encouraged by her father, whose expansive West African art collection helped shape her visual language.

Her work celebrates depicted sentience — an emotional resonance brought to life through bold, vivid colors and the celebration of the female form. Using acrylics and watercolors on cartridge paper, she captures her own experiences living across three continents while honoring the cultural traditions that inspire her.

REWA’s career as an artist began during a deeply personal turning point, when creating became an act of catharsis. Her first body of work, The Pantheon, celebrated Nigerian deities and quickly gained international attention, leading to exhibitions at ReLe Gallery in Lagos, the Gallery of African Art in London, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in Brooklyn, and Ferrara Showman Gallery’s No Dead Artists in New Orleans. Her series Onicha Ado N’Idu explores the importance of naming rites in Igbo culture, revealing how names shape identity and legacy.

For REWA, art is both a personal diary and a spiritual practice — a way of preserving culture while expressing the beauty, strength, and complexity of women. Her work invites viewers into this dialogue, where color, tradition, and identity meet.

Come experience REWA’s extraordinary work in person at The Shop at the CAC before the end of Q3.
