Member Spotlight: Natera

We sat down with Lauren Swanson with Natera to learn more about their company, their time at The Shop, and what makes them love Salt Lake City.

1. Tell me more about your company, what do you all do?

Natera provides cell-free DNA testing in the oncology, women’s health, and organ health spaces.

2. What is your favorite part about the work that you do?

I enjoy building applications  and designing the technical infrastructure to support high-throughput labs. Having previously worked for smaller biotech start-ups, it is fun to learn new architectures that enable efficient processing of a large number of patient samples. I also enjoy working closely with the laboratory scientists and operators to ensure our team builds solutions that make their work more efficient.

3. How has being a member of The Shop Workspace impacted your work and creativity?

I have worked remotely since 2020, and while I enjoy spending time with my home office mate (my pup), it is nice to change-up my working environment and get out of the house. I find that the change of scenery energizes me and I feel more productive on weeks I can make it into The Shop.

4. Share a memorable moment or achievement that happened while working at The Shop.

I began my role at Natera just a few months ago. I have enjoyed starting this new position and learning about my new projects while at The Shop.

5. What’s your favorite thing about the community at The Shop Workspace?

I enjoy the thoughtful layout of the space, the complimentary coffee & fruit, and especially the free concert tickets from S&S Presents! I also really appreciate the thoughtful designation of social and quiet floors; it helps me focus when I am working, then relax when I am taking a break or having lunch.

6. Any advice for fellow members or entrepreneurs considering coworking spaces?

I think The Shop stands out amongst the Salt Lake Coworking spaces not only for the amenities that are provided, but also the members. I enjoy that a majority of the folks in the space are here regularly, and not just booking conference rooms while they are visiting Salt Lake. I think it helps make the place feel more lively and focused, as well as contributes to the sense of community.

7. What are your top three favorite spots in SLC?

1. Fisher Brewing

2. Caputos

3. The BST
