Dive into the world of genetics at MyOme! Our featured member, Faris, codes for MyOme and thrives on learning and creativity, finding inspiration among the driven community at The Shop Workspace. Whether they’re coding on the rooftop with a stunning view of Salt Lake City or enjoying late-night arcade adventures with friends, their journey blends science and fun in the most exciting ways. We sat down with Faris and explored the intersection of genetics and community.
1. Tell me more about your company, what do you all do?
MyOme is a genetics company which leverages whole genome sequencing methods to help patients build insights into disease and medication response risk informed by their entire genome. My role at MyOme is to help build the tooling we need to allow clinicians and patients to leverage this data into actionable insights.
2.What is your favorite part about the work that you do?
I’m extremely grateful to be able to apply my technical skills in the healthcare field. Most days, being surrounded by so many intelligent individuals, I have the chance to learn something new. Learning something new every day has always been a goal of mine so I feel especially thankful to be doing something I already love.
3. How has being a member of The Shop Workspace impacted your work and creativity?
There’s just something special about being surrounded by so many other driven individuals that makes me work harder. It’s really hard to put my finger on, but there’s something refreshing about coding on a new project in the coffee shop vibe of the 3rd floor, or catching some solid productivity in quiet on the 4th floor.
The best spot for me, though, is of course the roof in the Spring and Fall. When I’m up there, I feel like I’m sharing an open office with the entirety of Salt Lake City. Of course the hummingbirds, hawks, and other fauna have a lot going on during those seasons as well if you’re paying attention.
4. Share a memorable moment or achievement that happened while working at The Shop.
There have been a few memorable moments at The Shop, but some of the best have been on cold nights after hours, with other Shop members next to the fireplace on the roof, talking about everything and nothing under the stars and in the sea of lights of Salt Lake City.
5. What’s your favorite thing about the community at The Shop Workspace?
I feel as though everyone in The Shop community has their own drive for being here. Whether it’s someone starting off on the scary journey of running their first business or a veteran employee who’s vying for a new role at their company — all these folks are working hard to achieve, and it’s heartening to be a part of it.
6. Any advice for fellow members or entrepreneurs considering coworking spaces?
If you’re stuck in a rut with your workspace, career, or market, I highly recommend any co-working space as an affordable solution to try. The Shop especially offers a rich and vibrant community of folks from around Utah, and each person here has a motive, drive, and creativity they want to share.
7. What are your top three favorite spots in SLC?
My Three Favorite Spots in the Salt Lake Valley (In no particular order):
- Ensign Peak: Call me basic, but I love the views from up there, and it’s a really great spot to bring visitors as the hike is quite accessible and rewarding.
- (This is kind of cheating but): Any canyon. Seriously, my favorite thing about living in SLC is that you can head to any canyon in the Wasatch range, drive for half an hour, and be somewhere magical. It’s the main reason I swap out for snow tires every season
- Quarters: That area and barcade are one of my favorite late-night spots. A good night for me and my nerdy friends is pizza at the Pie Hole and beer and arcade games at Quarters downtown.
