My first of many Twilight Concerts was Modest Mouse in 2010. It was sweaty, chaotic, and magical, I was hooked. Since then, I’ve been to at least two shows every (official) season. It’s the one event that always signals to me that summer is officially here in Salt Lake, and it’s only gotten better over time.
Now, as Director of Coworking at The Shop (and someone who lives and breathes downtown Salt Lake), I consider it a personal mission to make sure everyone experiences Twilight the right way. That starts this weekend, with EarthGang at the Gallivan Center and if you’re even thinking about going, let me give you the inside scoop.
Don’t Rush – But Don’t Roll In Late Either
Gates technically open at 6 PM, but unless you’re committed to snagging front row or scoping every vendor booth, the sweet spot is closer to 7 PM. Here’s how to do it right: meet your crew for a pre-show sip on The Shop SLC rooftop, head into downtown (on foot or a GREENbike), snag a quick bite/sip, and then roll into Gallivan in time to catch the openers and claim your ideal viewing spot before the headliner hits.
Twilight is all about the vibe. It is an incredible mix of music, people-watching, and the kind of summer energy that makes downtown feel electric. Ease into it. Enjoy the lead-up. The best nights start with a plan, not a rush!
Know Your Artist, and Why You Should Be Excited
If EarthGang is new to you, consider this your listening homework: queue up Mirrorland, Ghetto Gods, and their collaborations with J. Cole and Dreamville. Their live shows are electric, theatrical, funny, and full of movement – blending hip-hop, funk, soul, and straight-up showmanship. I’ve pulled together some pre-show listening for you here:
Where I’d Eat (and Drink) Before or After Twilight Concerts
I’ve tested pretty much every combo of pre- and post-Twilight dining over the years, and these are the ones I keep going back to:
- Copper Common
If I could only send you to one place, it’s here. Get the burger. Trust me. It’s just down the block from Gallivan, has a chill vibe, and feels like the unofficial pregame spot for locals who know what’s up. Their neighboring spot, Copper Onion, is also a favorite – but make sure to grab a reservation. - Franklin Ave
Want to feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem? This spot’s got you. The chicken sandwich is so good it should be illegal. Grab a booth, share a few apps, and toast to summer finally arriving. - Monarca
Come for the vibe, stay for the margaritas. It’s elevated Mexican just steps from the venue, perfect if you’re showing up with a crew and want to start the night strong. Bonus points if you grab a table on the balcony. - Beer Bar
Laid-back, fast, and exactly what you need if you’re running behind or want a late-night fry fix. The fries are legendary. Add an iced cold beer (UTOG’s Mandarin Kölsch is the answer) and you’re concert-ready.
One Last Thing on Twilight Concerts…
At The Shop, we’re proud to support the Twilight Concerts because it’s more than just music, it is one of our favorite community events. Our members get free tickets, sneak peeks at what’s coming up, and sometimes even rooftop pre-show events. If you’re not a member yet, let this be your excuse to come by. Book a tour, grab a trial day, and come see how we work and play downtown.
See you at Gallivan, I’ll be the one singing along.
