Reimagining the Masters: e2’s “In Empathy We Trust” Comes to The Shop
At The Shop’s rotating art wall, we’re proud to feature a thought-provoking photographic series that challenges the way we see both art and each other. In Empathy We Trust, created by the collaborative duo e2 (Elizabeth Kleinveld and Epaul Julien), is a bold reimagining of iconic works from art history—where photography and performance come together to spark new conversations.
Spanning nearly 600 years of artistic influence, the series revisits masterpieces inspired by legendary painters like van Eyck, Raphael, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fragonard, and Manet. But this is not simple homage. Through carefully staged photographic recreations, e2 “remakes with a twist,” casting subjects across diverse identities—race, age, and sexual orientation—to disrupt traditional narratives and expectations.
The result is both striking and playful. Humor and wit are woven throughout the series, inviting viewers to look twice—and think deeper. By recontextualizing familiar imagery, e2 encourages us to question long-held assumptions and consider how stereotypes can shape perception, often leading to prejudice and discrimination.
The roots of this collaboration run deep. Kleinveld and Julien began working together in 2010 following their involvement in Before (During) After: Louisiana Photographers Respond to Hurricane Katrina. That experience highlighted social inequities across Louisiana and sparked ongoing conversations about justice, representation, and storytelling—conversations that continue to shape their work today.
Adding another layer of meaning, In Empathy We Trust includes a custom-designed coat of arms. Featuring pelicans and a fleur-de-lis, it pays homage to the artists’ Louisiana heritage while reimagining a traditional symbol of power. At its center is their guiding motto: In Empathy We Trust—a reflection of their belief in the power of images to shift perspectives, open minds, and foster connection.
This featured series is on loan from FERRARA SHOWMAN GALLERY, whose continued support helps bring impactful contemporary work into our shared space.
This series isn’t just something to view—it’s something to experience. It invites you to engage, reflect, and even see the world a little differently.
