About the Organizations
Founded under the Patronage of Nelson Mandela, Laureus Sport for Good uses sport as a powerful and cost-effective tool to help children and young people overcome violence, discrimination and disadvantage in their lives. Over the past two decades, they have developed a global network of grantee partners and a worldwide charitable infrastructure. They have also developed a depth of understanding and corresponding credibility in our field and are recognized as a leading organization in the fast-growing Sport for Development community.
Since their inception, Laureus Sport for Good has directly invested over $150 million into youth-serving programs around the world — from South Africa to Hong Kong to Argentina. Laureus’s global network of foundations has collectively supported over 150 Sport for Good programs across 40 countries, reaching over 1 million youth.
Last week we proudly welcomed their New Orleans and Chicago team into the Shop at the CAC to host a Town Hall and Panel.
Here is a note and recap straight from Tiffany Aidoo from Laureus, who was our moderator for the panel:
“First, shoutout to the orgs that were able to attend the Townhall yesterday. We had an incredible turnout and panel, which included our friends from Girls on the Run New Orleans, Youth Run NOLA, The Office of Councilmember Helena Moreno, and the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans. We also had special guests from Sport for Good Chicago. Let’s also not forget the 35+ organizations and individuals that showed up and made new connections!
To recap, here are some key takeaways from our panelists:
How to Work Best with Local Non-profits Using Sport: Amplifying the Well-being of a Young Person and Reducing Competition between Non-profits
Jon Lee, Youth Run NOLA & Julieanne Lund, Girls on the Run New Orleans
⁃ Every young person needs something different every season of their life- one org cannot do this for a child’s entire life
⁃ EDs are friends and learning from one another, attending events, supporting one another.
⁃ Organizations encouraging youth to attend another SBYD organization because they’re ready for something new and exciting.
⁃ Covid created scarcity but we are not competitors and at the end of the day we must support the kids. Showing the community closeness has made them stronger.
⁃ It’s not about who is the best it’s about providing young people with the best experiences possible.
External Partnerships with Government and Professional Teams: Building Sustainable Community Partnerships
Sherae Hunter, Office of Councilmember Helena Moreno & Sara Hayes, New Orleans Saints and Pelicans
⁃ Not everyone can pay to play- we need nonprofits to support the traditional systems
⁃ Want to know who those orgs are – difficulty with parks and programming; resources lacking. Want to highlight orgs and let the community know what’s available.
⁃ Sharing upcoming events/ ventures with City Council
⁃ From the Saints and Pelicans front office side of things; companies want a bigger community presence – the budget and want is there and then they can amplify
⁃ Spaces for people to come together and collaborate like this are really important.
Sport for Good 10-Year Campaign Ideas (Please submit your ideas— HERE)
⁃ Highlighting the impact of alumni; tracking alumni and leveraging those stories (especially over 10 years); telling the story on a larger scale— 10 year report? (First Tee of Greater New Orleans)
Again, thank you for joining the first Townhall of the year. Looking forward to our next venture in Sport for Good New Orleans!
With gratitude,
Tiffany”
