University of Utah Center For Medical Innovation Joins The Shop!

The Shop Workspace is proud to announce its newest anchor tenant, University of Utah Center for Medical Innovation. The new downtown lab space will make it possible for CMI to host groups from across the industry to advance new medical technologies.

“The Center for Medical Innovation’s move to downtown Salt Lake City is a great opportunity for even more members of our communities to engage with the inspiring work being done at CMI to discover and develop innovative new ways to improve health care,” said Dr. Michael Good, CEO of University of Utah Health. “The facility is located adjacent to the TRAX light rail station, and includes great shared spaces important for collaborative innovation. I’m thrilled to have CMI representing the University of Utah Health in this new location while we build CMI’s new home on the university campus.”

The Shop is a dynamic and inclusive co-working space that provides a supportive environment for startups, entrepreneurs and established businesses across various industries. CMI is joining an impressive roster of tenants including, but not limited to Equality Utah, S&S Presents, The Black Chamber and Black Success Center, and LearnUpon. The Shop is a key pillar of the dynamic, mixed-used development,The Exchange, that includes Avia and Mya residences and  The Local Market & Bar.

“The Shop has served as a resource for the companies and organizations making Salt Lake City an exciting hub for innovation,” said Matt Schwartz, CEO of The Domain Companies. “Our partnership with the Center for Medical Innovation will accelerate this effort, highlighting some of the most exciting work happening in Salt Lake today.  The Center’s commitment is a significant milestone in Downtown’s vibrant and diverse economic growth.”

“This was a great opportunity to bring all of our programming under one roof and give ourselves options to expand as we grow towards a new facility in the coming years,” explained Justin Brunson, Director of Operations at CMI. “We’re excited to be a part of the community at The Shop and be close to so many early-stage companies, some of which were founded from our programs at the University.”

CMI’s new space includes nearly 2,600 square feet dedicated to prototyping and engineering resources, including 3D printing, precision machining, and microelectronics assembly. The lab space will also offer shared workbenches and power tools for students and community members to use for ongoing projects.

“The Center for Medical Innovation and all of Utah are undergoing a monumental transformation. The Life Sciences industry is booming, and the University of Utah is playing a key role in that growth,” said Mark Paul, Executive Director of the Center for Medical Innovation. “Being able to bring groups together from across campus, industry, and our communities in this new space is going to propel new medical technologies forward even faster.”

Salt Lake City’s Mayor, Erin Mendenhall echoes the positive sentiment about the announcement. “I’m excited about this new development that further grows Tech Lake City and the broader BioUtah community,” Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said. “In the heart of downtown, the University of Utah’s Center for Medical Innovation found a new home at The Shop, creating an immersive space for students and MD’s to utilize tools and develop the next generation of medical technology. This partnership supports the City’s efforts to cultivate a bio-tech network that transforms and enriches people’s live,” she added.

The Center for Medical Innovation’s new downtown location includes a spacious prototyping lab on The Shop’s ground floor and an anchor office space dedicated to medical technology innovation.
