When people think of the type of person who is a member at a coworking space, someone who works in tech or freelance is usually some of the first things that come to mind. Lucky for us, Justine Nobbe is breaking the mold as a member of The Shop SLC! A pilot in training, Justine has flown past expectations of who could benefit from a coworking space and we are so grateful for it. Read on to learn more about how she uses The Shop SLC, what she’s working toward and more.
Tell me more about your company, what do you all do?
Currently, I’m a rotorcraft pilot working towards my commercial license with Utah Helicopter. At this point in my training, I spend a lot of time dialing in flight maneuvers, rehearsing emergency procedures, and using the aircraft instruments to navigate. But for every hour I fly, I spend, on average, twice as much time on the ground studying in preparation for upcoming exams with the FAA. I hope to be wrapped up with all of my training by the end of the year and will then start working as a certified flight instructor.
What is your favorite part about the work that you do?
There are few things better than navigating through blue skies over the epic Utah landscapes– I’ve been flying for about two years and I still have moments where I can’t believe I get to do this! But I also love the more subtle aspects of aviation: the thorough and systematic approach to every task, the required mindfulness as you aviate, the community emphasis on risk management… All of it keeps me on my toes; I never get bored.
How has being a member of The Shop Workspace impacted your work and creativity?
Utilizing The Shop has been a game-changer for me. Effective studying, for me, is all about systems and minimizing friction– having an established routine and an established workspace cues my brain to recognize when it’s time to hit the books.
Share a memorable moment or achievement that happened while working at The Shop.
I’m fairly new to the space so I haven’t had any major breakthroughs happen since I became a member. But, hopefully in the next month or so, I’ll qualify to take my next check ride with the FAA which will bring me one step closer to my commercial license.
What’s your favorite thing about the community at The Shop Workspace?
I tend to be a bit introverted initially, but I’m very grateful for the kindness and warmth of so many members and staff. I appreciate the small interactions I experience on a daily basis while working at The Shop: the quick chit-chat while making coffee, a wave and thank you when someone holds the door when your hands are full, the helpfulness of the team, the contagious productive and focused vibes. Humans are inherently social creatures. Working from home, you miss out on those small interactions, observations, and experiences of community.
I also recognize the intentionality that The Shop team invests into building this community– the snacks and treats, the happy hours, the meals, the helpful emails and updates. I’m grateful for that and happy to be a member here.
Any advice for fellow members or entrepreneurs considering coworking spaces?
There’s a lot of ways to be successful at your work, but personally, I like to stack the odds in my favor in whatever ways I can– using a coworking space definitely gives you a leg up. The professional atmosphere, networking opportunities, and facility resources are amazing benefits that you really can’t replicate at home.
